Description
Manufactured in England by Davey & Company, these beautifully-finished round bulls eye prisms are solid glass. The prisms have a flat surface deck-side and are round underneath with a depth of 45mm or 50 mm depending on the diameter.
The deep bronze frame makes these deck prisms ideal for thinner decks such as steel, aluminium or fibreglass.
The frame is fixed to the deck first and the glass is then set into the frame from the top. A marine quality black mastic such as a polysulphide or synthetic rubber should be used. To improve adhesion the glass should be abraded first where the sealant touches.
The glass prisms are produced today in much the same way as they were 100 years ago, i.e pouring molten glass into an open top mould, cutting the flow (judged by eye) and rubbing over the top. This process can produce the following imperfections:
a) Lines or ridges on the outside surface of the glass;
b) Bubbles captured within the glass;
c) Slight dipping on the top of the glass as it contracts when it cools down.
None of these in moderation are faults but rather part of the character of this hand made item.
