Let light into your vessel's cabin with a beautiful round glass deck prism. These glass prisms come with a bronze surround and are manufactured in England by Davey & Company. The well-finished circular prisms are solid glass - rippled on the underside side and smooth on the top.
In this style the glass is set first into the deck using a marine quality mastic (such as a polysulphide or synthetic rubber) and then the bronze frame is positioned over the rim of the glass and screwed down. This style of deck light should be used only where there is a suitable depth of deck material to support the prism. The bronze surround plate secures the prism to the deck but provides no structural support for the glass - see Davey's "deep frame" prisms for thinner decks.
Stainless steel-framed prisms are also available.
The glass prisms are produced today in much the same way as they were 100 years ago, i.e pouring molten glass into an open top mould, cutting the flow (judged by eye) and rubbing over the top. This process can produce the following imperfections:
a) Lines or ridges on the outside surface of the glass;
b) Bubbles captured within the glass;
c) Slight dipping on the top of the glass as it contracts when it cools down.
None of these in moderation are faults but rather part of the character of this hand made item.
