In April 1895, Joshua Slocum commenced a journey that would see him become the first person to sail alone around the world. His ship was the Spray.
While moored in Melbourne in 1896, Mr Shaw of St Kilda fell in love with the Spray’s winsome lines and obtained her blueprints. Mr Shaw commissioned JB Jones Shipyard to build a replica which was called Spray ll. With her keel laid in 1908 but launched in 1925, Spray ll was extended from 37’LOD to 45’LOD in the 1940s after an altercation with Brighton Pier. Spray ll was given a fine entry to the water at her bow in lieu of the characteristically bulbous Spray bow.
The vessel now for sale, Spray of the Coral Coast, is this same vessel.
Genuinely a part of Australia’s maritime history, Spray of the Coral Coast is known to be the oldest modified Spray in Australia and is believed to be the oldest in the world. Now in USL 1E commercial survey for 38 passengers, she presents in excellent condition.
Having sailed her from Gippsland Lakes to Bundaberg in 2006, the owners can testify to her excellent sea manners. As Slocum observed, she sits on the water like a swan and is light at the helm.
When the current owners were looking for a commercial yacht they could semi-retire into, they looked for a vessel that had character, marketing appeal, a shallow draft for sailing coastal Queensland, a wide beam for stability and had an interesting history.
Spray of the Coral Coast is an excellent blue water yacht in her own right, but she is also a commercial vessel whose heritage value and traditional character give her a unique marketing appeal.
She has been hired for fashion shoots, weddings, corporate and special events. Interest has also been expressed for introductory sail training lessons being offered by organisations utilising Spray.
As a recreational vessel, she is a delight to sail. As a commercial vessel, she provides significant tax offsets in the right corporate structure. As an historic vessel, she is always the centre of attention in every marina.
The sale price includes Spray of the Coral Coast marketing material & the domain names: spraycruises.com / spraycruises.com.au / sprayofthecoralcoast.com
